Health Testing

At Wizbang's Russian Toys, we take pride in being a responsible and dedicated dog breeder. Our top priority is the health and well-being of our dogs, and we strictly follow breed parent clubs' guidelines for testing. Through comprehensive health evaluations and DNA testing via Embark, we ensure that each of our Russian Toys are not just beautiful and affectionate but also healthy.

We firmly believe that informed breeding practices are vital for enhancing the longevity and quality of life for our dogs. Our passion for Russian Toys goes beyond breeding; we are committed to continuous research and education on health-related issues affecting the breed.

We understand that certain health concerns, like patellar luxation and heart conditions, can impact Russian Toys, and we aim to mitigate risks through responsible breeding choices. At Wizbang's Russian Toys, we strive to give our puppies the best possible start in life while equipping future owners with the knowledge needed to raise healthy and joyful companions.

OFA Testing, or Orthopedic Foundation for Animals testing, is essential for evaluating the health and genetic integrity of dogs, especially concerning hip, elbow, and other joint conditions. A CHIC number, or Canine Health Information Center number, is granted to dogs that have completed this testing, indicating they meet the health screening standards for their breed. These certifications not only assist breeders in making informed decisions but also encourage responsible breeding practices, ultimately enhancing the overall health and well-being of the canine community.

Patellar Luxation

Patellar luxation is a common orthopedic issue in toy breeds, where the kneecap (patella) dislocates from its normal position in the groove of the thigh bone. This condition can lead to pain, lameness, and difficulty in walking, as the kneecap may slip in and out of place. Toy breeds, such as Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, and Yorkshire Terriers, are particularly susceptible due to their small size and conformation. Early diagnosis and treatment, which may include weight management, physical therapy, or surgical intervention, are important to maintaining the mobility and quality of life for affected dogs.

Ophthalmology Exam

Ophthalmology testing is crucial for ensuring the health and well-being of Russian Toys, particularly in relation to Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) and other eye diseases. Regular eye examinations can help identify potential issues early, allowing for timely intervention and treatment. By prioritizing these tests, breeders and pet owners can contribute to the overall quality of the breed and reduce the incidence of hereditary eye conditions. Ultimately, maintaining the eye health of Russian Toys ensures they lead happy, active lives.

3

Basic Cardiology Exam

Heart exams are crucial for small breed dogs, as they are more susceptible to heart conditions than larger breeds. Regular veterinary check-ups can help detect early signs of heart disease, allowing for timely intervention and treatment. Common issues include mitral valve disease and congestive heart failure, which can significantly impact a dog's quality of life. By prioritizing heart health through routine exams, owners can ensure their small breed dogs lead healthy and happy lives.

4

RTCA Optional Testing

Health testing is essential for identifying conditions such as Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, which affects the hip joint in young dogs, leading to and mobility issues. Radiographic evaluation for hip dysplasia involves taking-rays to assess the structure and positioning of the hip joints, helping to diagnose any abnormalities. Elbow dysplasia testing examines the elbow joint for deformities that can cause pain and arthritis, ensuring early intervention. Additionally, paired serum bile acid testing is used to assess liver function, providing vital information about the health of the liver in pets.

DNA Testing: Embark

Embark testing is a cutting-edge genetic testing service that helps breeders evaluate the health and lineage of their animals. By providing detailed insights into breed composition and potential inherited disorders, Embark testing allows breeders to make informed decisions that enhance the quality of their breeding programs. This information not only aids in selecting the best breeding pairs to promote desirable traits, but it also helps to reduce the risk of inherited genetic diseases, ultimately leading to healthier, more robust offspring. By implementing Embark testing we believe that we can significantly elevate the standards of a breeding program, ensuring long-term success and sustainability.
